Sightseeing in Ephesus - Ephesus Arcadian StreetSightseeing in Ephesus - Ephesus Arcadian Street, Ephesus Tour, Ephesus Guide

Arcadian street in Ephesus is situated between the Harbour Baths and the Grand Theatre. Traders, sailora and other visitors came first through this street after arriving to the port. The street was constructed in the Hellenistic period, and then restored during the rein of Arcadius (395-408 AD.), thus the street takes its name from him.

As this street extended to the harbour, it was also referred to as "Harbour Street.
The street was 530 meters long and 11 meters wide, it was designed with marbel slabs and colonnades. On both sides of the street there were shops and galleries, and gates in the form of monumental arches. There were four high columns with the statues of four apostels on the top.

It was one of the three streets at that time along with Rome and Antioch which was lighted. 50 streetlights lit up its colonnades and water, sewerage channels ran beneath the marble flagstones.

The first building near the Grand theatre is called the Theatre Gymnasium. It is a building from the second century AD with two floors and numerous rooms. Mostly it was used for sport exercises.

At the entrance of the port you can find the remains of the Port Baths or the Harbour Baths. They were built in the year 2 AD.The Baths are also called the Baths of Constantine, as they were restored by Constantine II (337-361). It was one of the largest building with 160 m wide, 170 m long and 28 m high.

Turkey is rich with the historical places: Didyma, Priene, Milet, Aphrodisias, Pergamon and certainly Ephesus plays a huge role among them. Ephesus is called one of the seven world wonders. We recommend for every one coming to Turkey to visit Ephesus and its surroundings: the temple of Artemis, the Seven Sleepers cave, St. John Basilica, The House of Virgin Mary, not because of its magnificence but also because of its importance for the Christian, Jewish, Catholics and other religions in the world .
